Here in Portland, spring arrived...oh, about two days ago. Even though the calendar says it's summer, temps have only been in the low 70's with one day in the low 80's. Sasha loves to perch in this doorway and snap at all the flies that try to get past her and into the house. It's her summer job, and one she takes seriously.
Savannah, on the other hand, doesn't believe in having a job. She prefers to sit and soak up the sun while occasionally chasing the ever brainless squirrels that come within a hairs breath of being her next victim. Yes...one time she did catch a squirrel, much to my horror. It bit her lip savagely, but she held on, and well, the squirrel went to heaven that day.
Chloe Anne is still determined to hatch those eggs. I don't think they are even fertilized because it has been more than 21 days. I felt so bad for her, I went to the feed store and bought a few babies, thinking I could trick her into believing her dead eggs had hatched. After all, are chickens all that smart? Well apparently so. I put the chicks in the nest box and when she came back in to sit on her eggs and saw the chicks she proceeded to try and kill them. The results? I am now brooding six chicks in the brooder. So much for that little plan of mine. Who feels like the stupid one now?
Here are the little darlings that I saved from the savage beak of my crazy hen. They are so cute. I am such a sucker. When will I ever learn? Oh well, that just means more eggs! That's a good thing!
I should have name my farm "Gullible Farms". Don't you think?
